The Prague Agenda - the Way Forward

The Institute of International Relations in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic cordially invites you to the conference

The Prague Agenda - the Way Forward

The historic city of Prague has recently hosted two major international security events. First, in April 2009 US President Obama arrived in Prague to announce his bold nuclear disarmament vision. Second, in April 2010, Prague was chosen to host the summit of bilateral US-Russian nuclear arms control talks that resulted in the signature of the New Start Treaty. The selection of Prague as the venue provides now a unique opportunity to take stock of the progress achieved so far in the two agendas. With the participation of high ranked world representatives and renowned experts, the goal of the whole event is to explore both political and expert views related to disarmament, arms control, non-proliferation and nuclear security.

Speakers include:

Panel I: Taking Stock of the Prague Agenda

  • Gary Samore, United States National Security Council, Special Assistant to the President and White House Coordinator for Arms Control and WMD, Proliferation and Terrorism
  • Peter Gottwald, Commissioner of the Federal Government for Arms Control and Disarmament, Germany

Panel II: Strategic Thinking: Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

  • Ian Anthony, Director of the Programme on Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-proliferation of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)
  • Mark Fitzpatrick, Director of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Programme, The International Institute for Strategic Studies, London
  • Dmitri Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center

Panel III: Strengthening the Nuclear Security

  • Kim Bong-Hyun, Deputy Minister of Multilateral and Global Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Republic of Korea; Sherpa of the ROK for the Nuclear Security Summit
  • Lisa Hilliard, Director, International Affairs, World Institute for Nuclear Security
  • Khammar Mrabit, Director of the Office of  Nuclear Security of the International Atomic Energy Agency
  • Stamatios Tsalas, Head of Unit, Nuclear Energy, DG Energy, European Commission

The conference will take place on Tuesday, 12th April 2011 from 9:30 – 16:00.

The venue is the Great Hall, Czernin Palace, Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Loretánské nám. 5, Prague 1.
