The International Institute of Political Science of Masaryk University (IIPS) is an independent research body, founded in 1990. The Institute is not established on the basis of any former institution, operating under the communist regime. Arising as an original modern think-tank, it strives to evolve the best traditions of democratic societies of Western Europe and the United States. The IIPS seeks to contribute to the refinement of Czech society in a way comparable to the methods of research organizations in developed democratic countries.
The Institute is a working think-tank, meaning that it is not only a research establishment, but also seeks to influence and advise policymakers. The frequency, variety and assertiveness of its activities, which include numerous academic publications and organizing of conferences, provide for a unique reservoir of ideas. IIPS aims to issue works of the highest intellectual depth and quality, which in the Czech milieu are often probing and innovative. At the same time, the Institute doesn't consider itself to be restricted to the sole subject of political science. Its multidisciplinary researchers exert concern extending to various subjects of social sciences and thus help improve intercommunication between social scientists.
The Institute acquired its international character via its Czech founders' collaboration with their partners from the Netherlands and United States of America. Recently, prospective cooperation with associates from Belarus, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine is being developed.
